Stefanie Posavec and Jon Schwabish

21.11.2019

We are incredibly lucky to be able to organise an evening with two world-renowned leaders in the field of data visualisation – Stefanie Posavec and Jon Schwabish. They are hosting their Data, Designed workshop in London on November 21 and offered to do short talks afterwards.

Stefanie Posavec - A community of data points

As a designer and author, Stefanie uses data-gathering and data visualisation as a design process, taking seemingly ‘cold’ data and using it to communicate warm, subjective messages in her creative practice. She’ll be talking about her explorations in making data more engaging, memorable, and accessible to lay audiences who are new to data, using her more community-focused data outreach projects in hospitals and museums as case studies to show how data can be a powerful tool when creating public art. Stefanie Posavec is a designer for whom data is her favoured creative material. This work has been exhibited internationally at major galleries including MoMA (New York), the Centre Pompidou (Paris), the V&A, the Design Museum, and the Wellcome Collection (London). Her work is also in the permanent collection of MoMA, New York. She is currently working on a new book with the data journalist Miriam Quick to be published through Penguin Random House in Autumn 2020. Previous books (co-authored with Giorgia Lupi) include Dear Data and their journal Observe, Collect, Draw! www.stefanieposavec.com, Instagram / Twitter: @stefpos

Jon Schwabish - The Graphic Continuum

Simply put, one of the biggest challenges of visualizing data is the infinite variety of charts to choose from. There is no one-to-one mapping from data type to graph type: A column chart, for example, can be used to show changes over time or to compare different categories. While there is no correct answer to this question, in this talk, I provide a way to think about how different graphs relate to one another through shape and encodings. Join Jon on this short, fun journey through a continuum of graph types. Jon Schwabish is an economist, writer, teacher, and creator of policy-relevant data visualizations. He is considered a leading voice for clarity and accessibility in how researchers communicate their findings. His book Better Presentations: A Guide for Scholars, Researchers, and Wonks helps people improve the way they prepare, design, and deliver data-rich content. He is on Twitter @jschwabish. There are still some few slots available for their workshop. So if you would like to bring your data to life using innovative visualization techniques in this one-day workshop unlike any other, and learn from world leaders that come from two sides of data visualization: data science and design, don't hesitate to register at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/data-designed-london-tickets-59444318557. This meetup is generously supported by Maddthing, the womxn & non-binary-led creative consultancy, whose co-founder, Maral Pourkazemi, was a co-creator of data and storytelling events VISUALIZEDio, Visualized and DataRave. The evening will take place at their studio in Hackney Wick at 4 Schwartz Wharf, London E9 5AA, United Kingdom. To get to the studio from the Hackney Wick station, followed the White Post Ln all the way to a small alleyway leading to the White Post Cafe. The entrance to the building with the studio will be to the left before you enter the cafe. We'll try to have signs and someone outside of the building to help you navigate to the venue. Please see the following sketch for a reference (https://drive.google.com/file/d/16rAFgC7NgdaE1jHHbYuybL0LR5gMfobX/view). We'll be opening doors from 6:30 pm with the talks starting just after 7 pm. There will be drinks, mulled wine and snacks available for purchase.
